Thirty Five Volunteers, which included seven members of the Western
Slope 4 Wheelers, participated in the campground volunteer project
with the Public Lands Partnership, U.S. Forest Service and the Thunder
Mountain Wheelers on Saturday, June 2, 2007. Participants from the
Jeep Club were Ken & Bonnie Emory, John Archuleta & Dee Salazar,
Chuck & Carol Hughes and Jerry Karnopp. The volunteers assembled
at the Public Lands Office in Montrose at 8:30 A.M. and traveled to
the Iron Springs Campground via old Highway 90.
Tammy of the Forest Service had a special request of John Archuleta
to bring his Jeep, as there was some “winching” to be
done. John, Ken & Jerry winched old posts & poles, Bonnie
& Dee cleaned out fire pits, Chuck repaired fence, and Carol hauled
and placed rocks to define parking and camping places. The other volunteers
cleaned restrooms, rebuilt and painted picnic benches, installed a
new kiosk and other campground signs.
Thanks to The Eatery of Delta for providing lunch for the volunteers.
